This is the general FAQ for people new to the project. More involved questions about submission guidelines, how to author materials and licensing issues are covered in the Contributor's FAQ.

What is freedoom?
See the What is Freedoom? page for a brief introduction to the project.
Can I Contribute?
We are always looking for people to help!
Check out the Contributors section of the site for information on helping out.
What sort of quality control is being done on this project?
At present we do not employ any sort of quality control over submissions. The only criteria are that the licence must be compatible with ours and the resource must be suitable for use in place of the original resource. For example, textures are expected to tile where the originals did, and be the same dimensions, etc.
Having no quality control is cause for concern with some people - how can we expect to get a good product? We are interest in replacing all resources before we turn attention to quality, continuity and feel. If we took these into account from the offset, it would take a lot longer to reach our primary goal. Also conflict resolution (Which BFG do we accept?) is an involved issue.
I want to work on a resource, but I am worried that someone else will pre-empt me. Can I reserve it?
Yes, you can reserve a resource. Contact the maintainers (listed on the contacts page) to have the resource reserved for you.
From time to time we will chase up reserved resources to see if the author is still working on them, and unreserve things if the author is unresponsive or uninterested in continuing.
If you are holding a resource and have no interest in continuing work on it, please contact us and let us know - also provide your incomplete work as someone else may be able to polish it off.
How close to completion are you?
We put a rough guide to how complete the project is on every page on the site. Check the status page to see the percentage of completed resources, sorted by category.
What port is needed to play freedoom?
The freedoom maps are being designed for boom-compatible engines. A list of suggested doom engines is available on the download page.
However, if you are using the freedoom IWAD in order to play a third-party PWAD, you should be able to use it with any doom engine at all that the PWAD supports.
Isn't the name FreeDOOM dangerous?
Yes, possibly. We've argued this a bit. Freecraft was apparently terminated due to having too similar a resemblance to Starcraft. However, I suppose we needn't change the name unless we are challenged. Freedoom also sounds a lot like `freedom', which is the point of the IWAD :-)
Your existing resource-x is crap. Can I work on a replacement?
We do not want people to work on resources which have already been completed. Our primary goal is to replace 100% of resources.
Once this has been achieved, we will turn our attention to quality and theme. If a particular resource does not fit with the theme we choose, then there might be an opening for a replacement.
